GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau – France (Sunday, August 19, 2012) - Filipe Toledo (BRA) 17 has just won the ASP 5-Star Soöruz Lacanau Pro in clean 2-3Ft surf at La Grande Plage of Lacanau. Toledo managed to outsurf Jack Freestone (AUS) in an exciting final where the heat lead changed a few times before the flying Brazilian comboed his opponent with a near perfect 9.53 and a 8.00 point ride netting the highest heat total of the event in the process. Filipe Toledo started his final day with a convincing performance in semi-final number 2 of the Soöruz Lacanau Pro where he defeated Dion Atkinson using his full aerial repertoire including a big air reverse and a kerrupt flip high over the face of the wave. After a short break to re-energyze, Toledo paddled out for the final very determined to impose his style over Freestone. “I’m super stoked !!” Toledo started. “This is my best result so far for sure, I don’t have words to describe how I feel it’s just amazing, unbelievable ! I know Jack surfs pretty much like me and I tried not to do too much airs but you know you got to do what it [...]

GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau – France (Saturday, August 18, 2012) - The fifth day of competition started this morning in Lacanau with the Round of 32 in clean 3-4Ft waves offering barrels and room for manoeuvers to some of the World’s Best. After a long midday break due to the extremely low tide, the event resumed in the afternoon to complete the round and move all the way into the quarter-finals that decided the last four who will battle it out for the event win tomorrow. Filipe Toledo (BRA) 17, was on fire today starting his day with a very convincing heat where he found two barrels to net the highest heat total of the entire event so far, an incredible 17.33 out of 20. The Brazilian flying man took it to the airs in his later heats and earned his spot in the semi-finals with two high excellent scores in the quarter-finals. “I’m feeling tired for sure, but also very excited !” Toledo stated. “Those waves are pretty good for airs, I’m trying a lot of them this week and I’m pretty stoked to make them. I’ve had a semi in Newquay and a quarter at the US Open so [...]

GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau – France (Friday, August 17, 2012) - After an early morning deception, competition resumed at 12pm in clean 4-5Ft offshore waves breaking on the outside banks at La Grande Plage of Lacanau. Once again conditions cleaned up with the upcoming tide to culminate this evening with powerful barrels in the shorebreak right in front of the crowd. Stu Kennedy (AUS) 22, was the first surfer in Lacanau today to find the perfect ride and was rewarded a perfect 10 point by all five judges of the panel. Starting frontside on a big hollow righthander, the young Australian traveled deep inside the barrel before coming out to a long and critical floater and finally hitting the lip one more time. “I took off on a pretty average wave at the start, had a good first turn and just got it through to the shore and got a decent score.” Kennedy said. “I was paddling back out, and this bomb came in toward me, I was just in the perfect spot, almost could have been a little bit too late for it but luckily on this equipment you can take off real late and it just opened up perfectly [...]

GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau – France (Thursday, August 16, 2012) - Day 3 of the ASP 5-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro started in excellent 6Ft surf at La Grande Plage of Lacanau this morning. Conditions graduately cleaned up and culminated this afternoon in pumping surf closer to shore providing quality entertainment for the ever growing Lacanau summer crowds. Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) 18, scored the highest single wave score of the day when he was rewarded a 9.67 out of 10 in the dying minutes of his heat for a combination of two massive turns on an outside bombie. The young Moroccan freshly crowned European Junior Champion showed he was ready to surf amongst the older crowd of international surfers in Lacanau. “Thankfully we had a 30 minutes heat because I’ve struggled for a while,” Boukhiam said. “It took me ages to paddle back out after my first wave and with one minute remaining I needed a pretty big score. I found this perfect right and I was right in the spot with priority on the white, and I was able to do two big turns. I almost fell on the second one cause this is a small wave board and it didn’t [...]

GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau – France (Wednesday, August 15, 2012) - This morning conditions were radically opposed to yesterday’s, with stormy winds and unclement swell at the main beach of Lacanau. 3-4Ft surf is breaking but the strong wind gusts have destroyed the lineup, not allowing competition to re-start at the ASP 5-Star Sooruz Lacanau Pro. With an expected improvement in the conditions forecasted for the upcoming four days remaining in the event’s waiting period, event officials have decided to call a lay-day today and will reconvene tomorrow morning at 8am to decide wether the third round of competition can be disputed in Lacanau. Iain ‘Ratso’ Buchanan, ASP Europe’s head judge, had a close look at the ocean all morning and decided along with the contest director, to call off competition after the third call today. Both observed that the conditions didn’t improved as expected and remained significantly difficult compared to what they’re going to be in the upcoming days. “We’ve decided to call it off today and have a lay-day” stated Buchanan. “I’m just coming from surfing actually and a few of the guys from the next round were out there and it was realy hard to link up one [...]

GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau – France (Tuesday, August 14, 2012) - Clean 3-4Ft waves greeted competitors this morning in Lacanau and the first few heats were surfed in pristine conditions before the southernly wind started blowing the beautiful peaks off. The rest of the competitors had a little more complicated line-up to play with but the level of performance was high on the first day of the Sooruz Lacanau Pro. Mateia Hiquily (PYF) 16, was both the youngest and most impressive surfer today in Lacanau. The Junior from French Polynesia started his Sooruz Lacanau Pro campaign in round one against three other Junior surfers but waited for his second round bout to step up his game and defeat older and more experienced competitors with a display of progressive surfing. “It started rather slow with small waves for me like 3′s and 4′s,” Hiquily commented. “I didn’t really know what I was doing but then I started building on it with a 5 and then a 6.83. I realised I had a pretty strong lead and when that good wave came and I saw the perfect section I just went for it !” Hiquily, who was first introduced to the surfing sphere [...]

GRANDE PLAGE, Lacanau – France (Monday, August 13, 2012) - Carlos Munoz (CRI) 19, and Lucia Martino (ESP) 18, have just won the 2012 Airwalk Lacanau Pro Junior in clean 3-4Ft surf at the main break of La Grande Plage in Lacanau. Beautiful conditions greeted competitors this morning for the final day of the event, and the action quickly started with the Men’s quarter-finals before moving into the semis and finals of both divisions. Carlos Munoz (CRI) 19, blew up in the final today, opening his wave count with an excellent 8.67 and backing it up quickly with a 7.17 to take the heat lead, which he never then let go. The flying Costa Rican left without pressure, started building momentum and found the best wave of the day to launch a massive backside air reverse rewarded by the highest score of the entire event, a near perfect 9.6 out of 10. “I’m really happy,” stated an ecstatic Munoz coming in from the water. “It’s my first time competing here in France and all the waves came to me right from the start and I’m super stoked to be in the final with those guys they surfed really hard !!
